Sabah Open: Mak Hee Chun-Tan Bin Shen continues upset streak

Kuala Lumpur: After knocking second seeds Low Juan Shen-Ong Yew Sin out of the tournament on Friday, the unseeded Mak Hee Chun-Tan Bin Shen reached the finals at Sabah Open on Saturday with another shock upset over fourth seeds Tan Wee Gieen-Teo Ee Yi winning 21-12,15-21,22-20 in 52 minutes. Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) shuttler Goh Soon Huat defeated Goh Giap Chin 22-20, 21-11 in the semi-final to set up a highly anticipated clash with another BAM shuttler Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin in the men’s singles final. Iskandar stopped Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub 21-10, 21-14 in other semi-final.

Soon Huat admitted it will be a tough game against Iskandar in the final.

“It’s a 50-50 match tomorrow against Iskandar, he has defeated me in the third round of Korean Open,” said Soon Huat.

Top seeds Amelia Alicia Anscelly-Soong Fie Cho are trying to finish the year on a high with their match up against Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean in women’s doubles final on Sunday.

The women’s singles final will see Lydia Cheah taking on second seed Yang Li Lian, while fourth seeds Tan Chee Tean-Shevon Lai Jemie will square off against second seeds Tan Aik Quan-Lai Pei Jing in the mixed doubles final.
