Kuala Lumpur: Ng Tze Yong gears up to face Japanese challenger Koki Watanabe in Malaysian Open 2024, a crucial encounter for both players as they set the stage for the 2024 campaign. Their previous clash at the Japan Open adds an element of anticipation, making this match a focal point in Tze Yong’s journey, especially considering his prior elimination by Kodai Naraoka in the Malaysian Open.
“After a month of rigorous training, I am optimistic about delivering commendable results this time.”
“After my defeat to him (Watanabe) at the Japan Open, I’ll engage in discussions with the coach to align with the planned training programs. My aim is to surpass my performance from last year. The first match is always challenging, and no one wants to face defeat,” expressed Ng, currently holding the 15th spot globally, while his opponent Watanabe sits at the 23rd position in the world rankings.
The Malaysian Open, classified with Super 1000 status, is slated to be held from January 9 to 14 at the Axiata Arena.
In 2023, Ng’s notable accomplishment was securing the runner-up title at the Arctic Open, where he faced defeat against compatriot Lee Zii Jia with a scoreline of 21-14, 21-15 in a match lasting 40 minutes.
Meanwhile, the 24-year-old Ng also aspires to secure a spot in the top 10 global rankings and hopes for an injury-free year.
“I am hopeful for an injury-free journey towards the Olympic Games (Paris 2024). My goal is to break into the world’s top 10, and most importantly, maintain a clean bill of health,” Ng expressed.
