The women’s competition saw two-time defending champion and No. 5 seed P.V Sindhu of India defeated Indonesia’s Lindaweni Fanetri 21-17 21-18 in a women’s singles match that lasted 46 minutes. The world No. 12 will next take on China’s Chen Yufei.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s challenge in the women’s singles fizzled out when Yang Li Lian was beaten by He Bingjiao of China 21-19, 21-15 in the Macau Open second round.
Malaysian men’s pair Low Juan Shen/Tan Kian Meng couldn’t ride the momentum from an impressive win against men’s doubles top seeds Liu Xiaolong/Qiu Zihan yesterday, losing to Hendra Aprida Gunawan/Markis Kido of Indonesia 22-24, 21-18, 17-21 in 64 minutes. Chooi Kah Ming/Ow Yao Han also faltered on Thursday against No. 5 seeds Li Junhui/Liu Yuchen of China, bowing out 12-21, 21-17, and 12-21.
Hoon Thien How/Lim Khim Wah seemed exhausted in the decider after they were pushed to the limit by No. 4 seeds Vladimir Ivanov/Ivan Sozonov of Russia and ended up losing the match 21-23, 21-19, 6-21.Ong Yew Sin/Teo Ee Yi also were sent packing by Alan Chan Yun Lung/Reginald Lee Chun Hei of Hong Kong 19-21, 18-21 in 26 minutes.
In the men’s singles, 16th seed Ihsan Maulana Mustofa of Indonesia shocked No. 4 seed Son Wan Ho of Korea, crushing the Korean 21-15, 26-24 to set up a clash with Indian’s No. 7 seed H. S. Prannoy for a semi-final berth.
Prannoy, on the other hand, showed tremendous tenacity as he bounced back from a game down to win the match against Qiao Bin of China 12-21, 21-11, 21-19.
Malaysian women’s doubles pair Chow Mei Kuan/Lai Pei Jing were shown the exit by South Korea’s Eun Jung Kyung/Chan Shin Seung after losing 14-21, 5-21.
Another of Chow Mei Kuan’s disappointment came in the mixed doubles after she and Tan Chee Tean lost 19-21, 21-17, 14-21 to Taiwan’s Lee Jhe-Huei/Rong Wang Pei.
