Singapore: World No. 7 mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai was full of fighting spirits at the Singapore Open opener and hoping to carry momentum into the World Championships in Nanjing, China, that starts on July 30th, 2018.
The No. 2 seeds managed to reel off 5 consecutive points in the second set on Tuesday, beating home players Terry Hee/Putri Sari Dewi Citra 21-16, 22-20 in the Singapore Open first round.
Shevon Jemie Lai told Malaysian media that she remained caucious even though they had a bye in the first round of the World Championships draw and could possibly face No. 1 seeds Zheng Siwei/Huang Yaqiong of China in the quarter-finals.
“When competing in international tournaments, all doubles pairs are going to give their best, especially this will be the highest level of competition in the sport of badminton,” said Lai.
“Therefore, Soon Huat and I will try to play our best here in Singapore to get ourselves ready for the World Championships. A good outcome in Singapore could definitely boost our confidence,” added Lai.
Goh/Lai will face the winner between Ren Xiangyu/Tang Jinhua of China or Parinyawat Thongnuam/Kittipak Dubthuk of Thailand in the Singapore Open second round.
