Huelva: Carolina Marin’s surgery to repair a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) of her left knee was successful. However, the women’s singles superstar is expected to need at least six months as she recuperates.
Marin, 27, tore the ACL and both meniscus on her left knee during training last Friday, and she confirmed on Tuesday that she would undergo surgery this week and start her recovery.
On Friday, she posted a tweet that showed her doing a fist pump gesture while sitting on a patient bed inside a hospital room.
“Here starts a new journey,” tweeted Marin.

Given her consistent performance at big tournaments such as the Olympics (won gold in Rio Olympics) and three World Championships (won gold in 2014, 2015, 2018), Marin was a heavy favorite to the Tokyo Olympics. She has a strong chance of defending her title in the Tokyo Olympics after winning four out of five tournaments she participated in 2021 (Yonex and Toyota Thailand Open, Swiss Open, European Championships). She won silver at the BWF World Tour Finals after losing to Tai Tzu Ying 21-14, 8-21, 19-21.
