Ho Chi Minh City: After rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her right knee during the Indonesia Masters final on January 27, Carolina Marin of Spain is set to compete at Vietnam Open in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday.

The Rio Olympic gold medalist underwent knee surgery on January 29 and had accepted the initial invitation to play in the World Championships that was held in Basel from August 19-25. However, she eventually had to pull out citing still needing more time for fully recovered.

Marin was emotional when speaking to media about her injury and rehab process.

“The day after I came back from Indonesia, doctor showed me the scan of my knee and told me I had a ruptured cruciate ligament and had to go through the surgery. I started crying a lot,” said Marin.

“I knew I’d be out of tournament for months and I’d miss that a lot. However, the second I left the hospital, I became fully focused on my recovering and I would like to comeback stronger and more determined than before,” added Marin.

In addition to the Rio Olympic gold medal, Marin was also the first woman to win three singles titles at the World Badminton Championships (2018, 2014 and 2015), surpassing previous women’s singles greats from China such as Han Aiping, Li Lingwei, Ye Zhaoying and Xie Xingfang, who all have 2 championships to their name.

Marin will open against Supanida Katethong of Thailand in the first round.
