Huelva: Cheam June Wei faced a difficult task on Friday, forced to battle the No. 1 seed Shesar Hiren Rhustavito of Indonesia in the Spain Masters quarter-finals, before falling 9-21, 10-21 to the Indonesian in 33 minutes.
Rhustavito will take on compatriot and the unseeded Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo in the semi-final, while Lee Dong Keun of Korea will play No. 2 seed Toma Junior Popov of France in another men’s semi-final.
There were some high-profile upsets in the men’s doubles category in the quarter-finals. The No. 1 seeds Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmussen of Denmark were defeated by No. 5 seeds Pramudya Kusumawardana/Yeremia Erich Yoche Yacob Rambitan of Indonesia, losing 17-21, 21-15, 11-21.
Indonesia’s men’s doubles No. 2 seeds Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin also went down to unseeded pair from Scotland and Denmark – Adam Hall and Frederik Sogaard, as Hall and Sogaard rallied from 21-22 in the decider to clinch the match 21-18, 17-21, 24-22.
Malaysia’s No. 5 seeds women’s doubles pair, Anna Cheong Ching Yik/Yap Cheng Wen put up a spirited fight but was not enough to beat No. 1 seeds Amalie Magelund/Freja Ravn of Denmark, succumbing to the Danish pair 21-13, 18-21, 17-21.
