Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s Ng Tze Yong is determined to break free from the pattern of winning today and losing tomorrow. Refusing to let inconsistency hinder his progress in tournaments, the world’s 15th-ranked player is revamping his training regimen in preparation for the upcoming season.

Recognizing the need for a more rigorous approach, Ng shared, “I have only a month to prepare for next year’s tournaments. Currently, I’m training for four hours in the morning and two hours in the afternoon. While it’s not my preferred routine, I must do it to enhance my performance.”

Frustrated by sporadic outcomes, Ng emphasized the importance of consistency during a post-training interview at the Academy of Badminton Malaysia in Bukit Kiara today. Reflecting on his performance this season, he achieved notable victories against prominent players, including a triumph over world number one Viktor Axelsen from Denmark at the All-England in March.

Despite these victories, Ng faced setbacks in subsequent matches, notably against Chinese player Li Shi Feng in the quarterfinals. Determined to rectify this pattern, Ng acknowledged the necessity for a more steadfast approach to his game.

For the current season, Ng showcased positive progress, moving up from a 28th world ranking at the start. He qualified for the quarterfinals seven times, reached the semifinals twice, and secured a runner-up position at the Arctic Open in Vantaa, Finland. However, he remains steadfast in his quest, stating, “My primary goal is the Olympics. I must maintain my ranking until the April 2024 qualification round to secure a well-deserved spot at the Paris Olympics.”
