Bangkok: Former new high performance director of the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) Rexy Mainaky had arrived in Thailand last Friday and is ready to start his new adventure as national team head coach of the Badminton Association of Thailand (BAT).
Mainaky who paired with Ricky Subagja to win the Atlanta Olympics in 1996, World Championships in 1995, Asian Games in 1994 and 1998 and All England tournaments in 1995 and 1996, has signed a one-year contract with BAT with the option of annual renewal until 2020.
As both a successful player and a successful coach, BAT embraced high expectations for Mainaky to bring them to the next level in badminton.
“We have signed the contract with Rexy for a year. But we have agreed that both BAT and Rexy will work together until the Tokyo Olympics in 2020,” said President BAT Patama Leeswadtrakul.
Thailand has yet to win a single medal since Badminton made its debut at the 1992 Summer Olympics.
“Rexy has started to work with our players immediately. I believe with his experience as a player and as a coach could help us clinch an Olympic medal,” added Leeswadtrakul.
Leeswadtrakul also revealed that she would hire another coach to assist Mainaky in the singles event.
