Kuala Lumpur: Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) men’s singles coach Rashid Sidek told Malaysian media yesterday that Lee Chong Wei would need a miracle to win gold medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Rashid explained that Chong Wei’s age and significant improvement from some of his opponents over time could make it harder for him to win the gold medal. Of course, Lee Chong Wei could only compete in the Olympics if he would receive a lesser ban from Badminton World Federation (BWF) on his doping case hearing.Rashid Sidek and Lee Chong Wei

“We could set a goal for Chong Wei to win a medal in Olympics, but definitely not gold medal, due to his age and increased competitions from other opponents,” said Rashid.

“We shouldn’t put too much pressure on him whatsoever, especially when he is still serving the suspensions. It would be remarkable if Chong Wei does qualify for the Rio Olympics,” added Rashid.

Having said that, Rashid said he would not be surprised if Chong Wei wins a precious gold medal for Malaysia at Rio.

“Anything could happen, by taking a lot of pressure off Chong Wei’s shoulders, he may experience a breakthrough. So, don’t count him out just yet,” said Rashid in an optimistic mood.
