Malaysia defeat Germany 5-0 in Sudirman Cup opener

Gold Coast: Malaysia secured a spot in the final 8 of the 2017 Sudirman Cup after it outlasted Germany 5-0 in the first Group 1C tie on Tuesday.

Mixed doubles pair Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing won a 21-17, 21-13 straight sets victory against Mark Lamsfuss/Isabel Hettrich and Lee Chong Wei overcame Roth Fabian 21-12, 21-11 in 34 minutes to score the second point for Malaysia.

Malaysia’s Rio de Janeiro Olympics silver medal winning men’s doubles pair Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong met some resistance from Jones Rafly Jansen/Josche Zurwonne in the second set before seeing off the German pair 21-16, 21-19 in 35 minutes.

The women’s singles match that followed saw Goh Jin Wei of Malaysia eased past Fabiene Deprez 21-10, 21-13 in just 31 minutes to extend the tie to 4-0 while Malaysia’s women’s doubles pair Vivian Hoo/Woon Khe Wei wrapped up the tie by demolishing Johanna Goliszewski/Isabel Herttrich 21-12, 21-11.

Malaysia will face Japan in their second Group 1C tie on Wednesday. Regardless who will win the tie on Wednesday, both Malaysia and Japan already qualified for the Sudirman Cup quarter-finals.
