Kuala Lumpur: The Academy of Badminton Malaysia (ABM) is making organizational changes. Previously serving as the Doubles Coaching Director, Rexy Mainaky has been elevated to the role of ABM’s Coaching Director.
The Secretary General of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Kenny Goh revealed the shift in leadership, emphasizing the academy’s desire to streamline its coaching structure with one director overseeing both the national singles and doubles divisions.
“While ABM hasn’t officially announced it, observers will note that Rexy now leads the coaching direction for the entire academy,” Goh stated.
Mainaky’s inaugural responsibility in his new capacity is at the ongoing Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games. The change in role was catalyzed last June when Wong Choong Hann, former Singles Coaching Director at ABM, resigned to spearhead the men’s singles in Hong Kong. This reshuffling necessitated Mainaky’s oversight of the singles’ division performance.
Goh expressed confidence in Mainaky’s capabilities, citing his extensive coaching experience in Indonesia and Thailand. He underscored Mainaky’s significant contribution in guiding the Malaysian men’s doubles pair, Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik, to their historic World Championships win last year.
As for the recent departure of Misbun Sidek, the former Youth Singles Coaching Director, Goh mentioned they are actively searching for a suitable replacement.
Discussing the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games, Goh is hopeful for the national men’s team’s prospects, even as they face challenges in their match against South Korea. Should they progress to the quarter-finals, a matchup with arch-rival Indonesia awaits.
