Kuala Lumpur: The 2023 Asia Mixed Team Championships draw was unveiled on Tuesday, and Malaysia was placed into Group B together with India, UAE, and Kazakhstan.
A total of 17 teams will battle for the championships scheduled to be held in Dubai from February 14 to 19. The Malaysian squad should face no problem reaching the knockout stage as only India could pose a serious threat to Malaysia during the group stage. The top 2 teams of each group would advance to the final 8.
China (winners of the 2019 Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships), Korea, Singapore, and Uzbekistan were grouped into Group A; Indonesia, Thailand, Bahrain, Syria, and Lebanon were in Group C, while the 2017 champions – Japan, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, and Pakistan were selected into Group D.
Each tie will comprise matches of one men’s singles, one women’s singles, one men’s doubles, one women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.
The third edition of the Asia Mixed Team Championships was supposed to be held in Wuhan, China in 2021, but it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Malaysia failed to cross the quarterfinal stage in the 2019 edition when it lost the men’s doubles, women’s singles, and men’s singles matches and went down to Japan 0-3.
