Malang: Malaysia’s World No. 65 Cheam June Wei eased into the final of the 2022 Indonesia Masters on Saturday with a straight-set 21-7, 21-3 win over World No. 82 Lee Chia Hao of Taiwan in the semi-finals.
The No. 7 seed Malaysian made short work of Lee as he was bidding for his first Indonesia Masters title, seeing off his Taiwanese opponent in just 18 minutes.
In another men’s singles semi-final, World No. 101 Leong Jun Hao also from Malaysia fought for 75 minutes to beat former World No. 1 Son Wan Ho of Korea 21-18, 18-21, 21-13.
Sunday’s meeting will be Cheam and Leong’s sixth head-to-head meeting and Cheam has a 3-2 career head-to-head advantage over Leong before Sunday’s final.
The men’s doubles No. 1 seeds He Jiting/Zhou Haodong of China got through a grueling first set before walking off the court victorious against compatriots – No. 4 seeds Ren Xiang Yu/Tan Qiang 23-21, 21-19.
He/Zhou will take on the local pair – the No. 5 seeds Rahmat Hidayat/Pramudya Kusumawardana in the final.
The women’s singles final on Sunday will be the rematch of last week’s Indonesia International Challenge final where Gao Fang Jie of China and Riko Gunji of Japan will be taking on each other again after one week.
Gao who is bidding for her second title in two weeks, defeated Gunji 21-9, 21-11 in last week’s Indonesia International Challenge final.
Meanwhile, both Japan and China have monopolized the women’s doubles and mixed doubles finals as Rui Hirokami
Yuna Kato of Japan will battle compatriots Rena Miyaura/Ayako Sakuramoto for the women’s doubles crown while two Chinese pairs – Cheng Xing/Chen Fang Hui, and Jiang Zhen Bang/Wei Ya Xin will play each other in the mixed doubles final.
