Madrid: After a ten-month absence from international badminton, Carolina Marin, the badminton queen from Spain and the 2016 Rio Olympics gold medalist, announced on Friday that she planned to stage her return from injury at the 2022 European Championships which will be held in Madrid, Spain, from Apr 25, 2022, to Apr 30, 2022.
Marin who came from Huelva, Spain, had to undergo surgery on June 4, 2021, due to tearing of both the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the menisci of her left knee during a training session on May 28, 2021, a few weeks before the start of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The injury has prevented Marin, who was the three-time world champion (2014, 2015, and 2018) and five-time European champion (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2021) from defending her gold medal at the Olympics.
Prior to this, she has also sustained another serious injury when she tore her right ACL when playing in the final of the Indonesia Masters in January of 2019. She was out for about eight months after that first injury.
“Today is a very important day because I announce that I am competing again. I am very excited, very motivated, I have left behind a long injury and I want to announce that I am returning to competition in Madrid”, said Marin, during a massive press conference in Madrid.
“The return has taken longer than expected because along the way we have had some setbacks,” added Marin.
