Carolina Marin, P.V. Sindhu knocked out of Denmark Open

Odense: Saina Nehwal upset fifth-seeded Carolina Marin on Wednesday to reach the second round of the Denmark Open in Odense, while second-seeded P.V. Sindhu was knocked out by Chen Yufei.

Nehwal, who took control of the match early in the first set, defeated Marin 22-20, 21-18 in just 46 minutes.

She will face unseeded Nitchaon Jindapol of Thailand in the second round.

Meanwhile, Chen Yufei capitalized on Sindhu’s slow start to win her first set against P.V. Sindhu. Although Sindhu put up strong efforts in the second set, but Chen walked away with the win 21-17, 23-21. Chen will take on Linda Zetchiri of Bulgaria on Thursday.

Women’s singles No. 1 seed Tai Tzu Ying put up a high-quality first round match on Wednesday against Cheung Ngan Yi of Hong Kong, before picking up his first-round victory 21-18, 21-13 in 38 minutes.

Malaysia’s Vivian Hoo/Woon Khe Wei also joined the Denmark Open first round casualty list when they were sent packing by No. 5 seeds Huang Dongping/Li Yinhui of China 17-21, 14-21. Huang/Li will meet Lee So-Hee/Shin Seung-Chan of Korea in the second round.
