Rio de Janeiro: Rio’s men’s singles No. 2 seed Chen Long has moved into the Olympic quarter-finals after easing past Adrian Dziolko of Poland 21-12, 21-9 in just 40 minutes on Saturday.
Chen was scheduled to play Kevin Cordon from Guatemala on Sunday, but Chen was informed that Cordon has pulled out from the tournament due to injury. Kevin Cordon defeated Chen in the first round of 2011 World Championship.
Despite able to clinch their second victory in Group B by easing past Eva Lee/Paula Lynn Obanana of USA with 21-14, 21-15 in their last match of Group B, China’s women’s doubles pair Luo Ying/Luo Yu ended in third place of Group B with 108 points upon completion tally of the total points earned in their group matches. There were two other women’s pairs who also record 2 wins 1 loss in the Group B matches, and after calculated points obtained in their group matches, Kyung Eun/Shin Seung Chan of Korea finished top in Group B, followed by Christinna Pedersen/Kamilla Rytter Juhl of Denmark.
Same situation applied to Group C in men’s doubles event, after No. 3 seeds Kim Gi Jung/Kim Sa Rang of Korea defeated Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen of Denmark 21-15, 21-18 on Saturday, they were able to clinch top spot in Group C with 2 wins and 1 loss. Although Marcus Ellis/Chris Langridge of Great Britain and Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen of Denmark also shared a 2 wins and 1 loss record, but the point differences has led to Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen’s elimination.
