Jakarta: World number one Lee Chong Wei who will be chasing his sixth Indonesia Open title, breezed through his second round match rapidly and easily with 21-4, 21-16 thumping of Frenchman Brice Leverdez. Unfortunately, luck was not on Chong Wei Feng and Mohamad Arif Abdul Latif’s side on Thursday.
Chong Wei Feng went down to Kenichi Tago of Japan 18-21, 15-21, and Mohamad Arif Abdul Latif was not be able to reproduce his stunning first round form by losing to third seed Jan O Jorgensen 21-18 21-11 in 30 minutes.
In a match which involved a lot of smashes and high-quality attacks, Tan Boon Heong-Tan Wee Kiong maintained their hold over Berry Angriawan-Ricky Karanda Suwardi of Indonesia 18-21, 21-18, 21-17 in 56 minutes. They are to showdown with Lee Yong Dae-Yoo Yeon Seong of Korea in the quarter-final.
“Boon Heong and I first played together at last month’s Thomas Cup group tie against Germany, but we have not played together since. We still in the process of trying to understand each other’s move,” said Wee Kiong.
“I really don’t know what will happen to us. We will be split up after Indonesia Open, I’ll partner with V-Shem and Boon Heong will play with Thien How in next week’s Australia Open. Regardless, Boon Heong and I will play our best in the tournament and let’s hope for the best,” added Wee Kiong.
In women’s singles, Malaysia’s Tee Jing Yi lost a hard fought battle against world champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand 21-10, 26-24; while Yang Li Lian lost 21-11, 17-21, 21-8 to world No. 5 Bae Yeon-ju of South Korea.
