Madrid: Even though the Rio Olympics women’s singles gold medalist – Carolina Marin has been absent from the badminton court for 11-month due to a left ACL and meniscus injury, she has created history on Saturday to become the first-ever women’s singles player to win six consecutive European Championships title.
The Spaniard defeated Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland 21-10, 21-12 for the title.
“It was great to be able to compete again,” said Marin.
“I am back, and I am trying to forget about the injury,” added Marin.
“I am very excited right now, not only for winning the championship but how I overcame the injury. I want to start thinking about the Paris Games, and I want to aim for the podium in Paris,” continued Marin.
In men’s singles, the Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Viktor Axelsen convincingly defeated compatriot and World No. 3 Anders Antonsen 21-17, 21-15 to capture his third European title.
After the match, Axelsen posted the message below on his social media, and his next goal would be to do well at the Thomas Cup Finals.

Mark Lamsfuss of Germany became the biggest winner on the last day of the 2022 European Championships as the German won both the men’s doubles and mixed doubles titles.
Lamsfuss and Isabel Lohau defeated Thom Gicquel/Delphine Delrue of France 16-21, 22-20, 21-16 in the mixed doubles final while he and Marvin Seidel outlasted Alexander Dunn/Adam Hall of Scotland 21-17, 21-16 for the men’s doubles title.
The Gabriela Stoeva and Stefani Stoeva sisters from Bulgaria managed to win their third consecutive European women’s doubles title by beating Linda Efler/Isabel Lohau of Germany 21-14, 21-10 in the final.
