Madrid: The Rio Olympics gold medalist and five-time European champion, Carolina Marin who is playing in her first tournament after an 11-month absence due to injury on her left anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and both left meniscus, has been doing extremely well at the 2022 European Championships.
Marin, the women’s singles No. 1 seed, fought hard to overcome Denmark’s No. 7 seed Line Højmark Kjaersfeldt 21-11, 14-21, 21-17 in 65 minutes to extend her head-to-head to 10 wins on Thursday. The Spaniard will face Neslihan Yigit of Turkey in the semi-finals.
In men’s singles, World No. 1 Viktor Axelsen dominated the proceeding from the start until the end by defeating Thomas Rouxel of France 21-16, 21-14.
Axelsen next faces Misha Zilberman of Israel.
Another player from Denmark – the World No. 3 Anders Antonsen also played well to ease past Nhat Nguyen of Ireland 21-15, 21-17 and will take on Toma Junior Popov of France on Friday.
In mixed doubles, the No. 1 seeds Marcus Ellis/Lauren Smith of England were stunned by No. 6 seeds Mikkel Mikkelsen/Rikke Soby of Denmark 11-21, 17-21.
Mikkelsen/Soby will meet No. 4 seeds Mark Lamsfuss/Isabel Lohau of Germany on Friday.
