Jakarta: February 1, 2022, marked the start of the Lunar New Year also known as the Chinese New Year. The celebration traditionally lasts for 16 days, and 2022 is the Year of the Tiger.
On Tuesday, Indonesia’s World No. 8 Jonatan Christie uniquely celebrated the Chinese New Year. He posted a picture of him and the President of Indonesia – Joko Widodo on his social media page with the following message:
“Good morning everyone. Uncle @Jokowi and I would like to wish a Happy Chinese New Year 2022 to all who celebrate the festival.”
In addition, Christie also set up a poll asking his fans to vote if they would like to receive the ang pao/red envelopes.
“Anyone want Ang Pao/Red Envelopes?” Christie wrote on the poll.
The result was 96% of his fans answered “Yes”, and only 4% chose “No”.
Jonatan said that he just want to share the joy of the Chinese New Year with badminton fans, and revealed that only a limited amount of ang pao/red envelopes were given out.
“Only 50 lucky people will get the ang pao/red envelopes. Good luck guys, just try to have some fun,” added Christie.
Christie won the men’s singles gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games and was the hero of the 2020 Indonesian Thomas Cup team where he led the team to its 14th Thomas Cup title by scoring the winning point in the 2020 Thomas Cup final in Aarhus, Denmark, beating China’s Li Shifeng 21-14, 18-21, 21-14. He had played three three-setters and a total of 4 hours and 17 minutes starting from the quarter-final, semi-final, and the final.
