Huelva: The three-time world champion – Carolina Marin has withdrawn from the 2021 BWF World Championships citing concerns about her recovery from the knee operation.

Marin who had a bye in the first round of the 2021 World Championships was scheduled to play the winner between Nguyen Thuy Linh of Vietnam or Han Yue of China in the second round.

“I was having a really good season start, I had won four tournaments out of five. I was feeling very confident, strong and in a good physical and psychological condition until just one bad movement broke my knee completely,” Marin said in a video posted on her Twitter. “Therefore my team and I have decided not to play the Huelva World Championship.”

Her coach, Fernando Rivas, also confirmed the news through a video shared on Marin’s Twitter page.

“The recovery process of this second injury has been a bit different than the first one. First – the injury has been more serious. The meniscus was deeply affected so she could not stand until she went a bit further on the recovery; Second – because of the mistakes we did on her first injury recovery, we learned quite a lot from them; Third – because at the time it happened, the decision of not playing the World’s Championships was due to her recovery process was slower than we expected.

From now on, we have to focus on recovering the court skills, adding intensity, recovering tactical concepts, and learning from the past. In January, we hope to come back to regular training, and in February, we hope to be ready for competitions,” said Rivas.
