Changzhou: Reigning World Champion PV Sindhu of India who came into Thursday’s China Open second round with a career 3-0 advantage over Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong, suffered a shocked defeat against the Thai player as the 21-year-old Chochuwong overcame Sindhu 12-21, 21-13, 21-19 in 58 minutes.
“I was trying to control my shots and to reduce my mistakes,” said the unseeded Chochuwong after the match.
“I played on the same court yesterday and that helped a lot in term of getting used to the wind inside the gymnasium. Players who can handle the wind would win,” added Chochuwong.
Chochuwong will meet China’s No. 3 seed Chen Yufei next. Chen needed a 71-minute battle to edge past An See-young of Korea 20-22, 21-17, 21-15.
Meanwhile, the second-seeded Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwan outlasted Japan’s Aya Ohori 21-19, 21-14 to reach quarter-finals. She will face Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand in the last eight.
In mixed doubles, Malaysia’s Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying wasted a match point in the second set, while making several uncharacteristic mistakes towards to end of decider to go down to Tontowi Ahmad/Winny Oktavina Kandow of Indonesia 21-17, 21-23, 18-21 in 65 minutes.
On the other hand, another Malaysian mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai fended off the late surge from No. 8 seeds Marcus Ellis/Lauren Smith of England in the third-set to win their second round match 18-21, 21-17, 22-20 in 70 minutes. The unseeded Goh/Lai will be playing No. 4 seeds Dechapol Puavaranukroh/Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand on Friday.
