PETALING JAYA: Although they have trained together only for the last two weeks, former internationals Lim Pek Siah-Chor Hooi Yee are aiming to reach the quarter-finals in the womens doubles event at the World Championships.
Pek Siah and Hooi Yee are two of three members from the Kuala Lumpur Racket Club (KLRC) who will represent Malaysia in the world meet, which starts tomorrow in Madrid.
The other shuttler is M. Sutheaswari, who will compete alongside top national womans shuttler Wong Mew Choo in the womens singles event.
All three left for Madrid yesterday.
The 27-year-old Pek Siah, who is competing in her fifth world meet, said they would go all out to score an upset.
I was down with an ankle injury for a month. I have not played together with Hooi Yee in a tournament since the German Open in January, said Pek Siah, who has been with the KLRC for almost three years.
It was only two weeks ago that Hooi Yee and I went full swing in training. Despite this, we are still looking for a good showing.
Their first main challenge will come from Swedes Petya Nedelcheva-Dian Dimova, the joint ninth-16th seed, in the second round. If they survive the test, they are expected to meet Chinas third ranked pair Du Jing-Yu Yang in the third round.
The duos best achievement in the world meet was when they reached the last eight at their first world meet outing in Glasgow in 1997.
Despite quitting the national team four years ago, Pek Siah said she was still driven to continue playing in competitive.
Our sponsor (Datuk Andrew Kam) has been very encouraging. I think he has spent close to RM1mil since I joined the club. I want to do well and repay his good deeds, she said.
Besides the Pek Siah-Hooi Yee, three other women doubles pairs will also represent Malaysia, all from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) set-up.
They are joint fifth-eighth seed Eei Hui-Pei Tty, Mooi Hing Yau-See Phui Leng and Ooi Sock Ai-Fong Chew Yen.
