New Delhi: Malaysia’s men’s doubles pair Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong and mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying have advanced into the final 8 of the India Open Super Series Badminton tournament held at the Siri Fort Indoor Stadium in New Delhi, India on Thursday.
Men’s doubles No. 1 seeds Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong overcame the Malaysia/Indonesia combo of Hendra Setiawan and Tan Boon Heong by winning 21-10, 21-17. Goh/Tan secured the chance of a revenge against Li Junhui/Liu Yuchen of China on Friday after they were beaten by the Chinese pair in the quarter-finals of All England on March 10th.
The No. 5 seeds Chinese pair survived a little scare on Thursday as they edged past Danish pair Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmussen 21-12, 23-21 in 38 minutes.
Unseeded pair of Lee Jhe-huei/Lee Yang of Taiwan however managed to pull off a huge upset on Thursday by shocking No. 3 seeds Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen 21-18, 21-18 in 37 minutes. The Taiwanese pair will take on No. 6 seeds Ricky Karandasuwardi/Angga Pratama of Indonesia on Friday.
In men’s singles, unseeded Wang Tzu Wei of Taiwan outperformed No. 5 seed Tian Houwei of China 21-14, 21-12 to set up a quarter-final clash with No. 3 seed Viktor Axelsen in the quarter-finals.
Malaysia’s No. 4 seeds in mixed doubles, Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying also cruised into the last eight by beating Edi Subaktiar/Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja of Indonesia 21-11, 21-19.
Chan/Goh will meet Korean pair Kim Gi Jung/Shin Seung Chan for a ticket to the semi-finals.
