Basel: Men’s singles top seed Lin Dan of China advanced to the quarter-finals of Swiss Open at the St. Jakobshalle in Münchenstein on Thursday.
The two-time Olympic Champion Lin comfortably dismissed No. 14 seed Brice Leverdez of France 21-7, 21-14 in 33 minutes. He will play 15 seed Ihsan Maulana Mustofa of Indonesia on Friday.
His counterpart Shi Yuqi who was the runner-up at last week’s All England, however was made to work by Denmark’s No. 9 seed Anders Antonsen before dispatching the Dane 16-21, 21-15, 21-16. Shi is set to play No. 5 seed H. S. Prannoy of India next.
There wasn’t much trouble for Malaysia’s women’s doubles No. 3 seeds Vivian Hoo/Woon Khe Wei on Thursday, beating Chiang Kai Hsin/Hung Shih Han of Taiwan 21-17, 21-12 to face No. 7 seeds Maiken Fruergaard/Sara Thygesen of Denmark in the quarter-finals.
In men’s doubles, last week’s All England runners-up and No. 2 seeds Li Junhui/Liu Yuchen suffered their second round exit at the Swiss Open as they slumped to a stunning three-set defeat to compatriots Liu Cheng/Zhang Nan 21-17, 12-21, 19-21.
Liu Cheng/Zhang Nan who were defeated by Li Junhui/Liu Yuchen in the All England semi-finals last Saturday, will battle Milosz Bochat/Adam Cwalina of Poland for a spot in the Swiss Open semi-finals.
