Ipoh: Lim Chi Wing of Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) defeated the 2012 Malaysian national champion Misbun Ramdan Misbun of Selangor to win his second Malaysian national title at Dewan Seri Perdana Kolej Sains Kesihatan Bersekutu Azlan Shah, Ulu Kinta on Saturday.
In a see-saw first set battle, the score was tied 17 times before Lim prevailed in a tight game with 21-19. The second set was predominantly one-sided as Lim demolished Misbun Ramdan 21-8 for the men’s title.
Lim pocketed RM20,000 for his victory, while Misbun Ramdan walked away with RM10,000.
In mixed doubles, second seeds Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai overcame scratch pair Chan Peng Soon-Chow Mei Kuan in a 3-set thriller 21-19, 16-21, 21-17 to win their maiden national championships title. Goh/Lai earned RM20,000 while Chan/Chow were awarded Rm10,000.
Unseeded women’s singles player Thinaah Muralitharan pulled off an upset against No. 4 seed Lim Yin Fun, beating Lim 23-21, 21-8 in the final. Muralitharan received prize money of RM14,000 for her victory, while Lim made RM7,000 as the runner-up.
Ong Yew Sin/Tan Wee Kiong were given a stern test before turning back against their teammates in BAM, knocking off Tan Chee Tean/Tan Wee Gieen 22-20, 21-18 to grab RM30,000 while the runners-up bagged RM15,000.
After dropping the first set, No. 1 seeds Vivian Hoo Kah Mun/Woon Khe Wei bounced back in the following 2 games to dispatch Chow Mei Kuan/Lee Meng Yean 20-22, 21-11, 21-8. Hoo/Woon received RM20,000 while Chow/Lee took home RM10,000.
