Kuala Lumpur: The retirement of World No. 1 men’s doubles player Lee Yong-Dae of South Korea, and the breakup of Rio Olympic men’s doubles champions Fu Haifeng/Zhang Nan of China has created a huge vacuum in men’s doubles that may permit World No. 2 men’s pair Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong to seize the opportunity to claim the top spot before end of 2016.
Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong who won the 2016 Rio Olympics silver medal believed that the No. 1 ranking is within their grasps if they are able to reach at least the semi-finals of the upcoming China Open Premier Super Series and Hong Kong Open Super Series.
“If we can play consistently well in every tournament, we are able to rise to the top position. I have always dreamed of becoming World No. 1, and I know we have good chance to achieve that this year,” said Goh V Shem.
However, Goh was also cautious about the raising expectations because his partner, Tan Wee Kiong was still recovering from an injury sustained at the Denmark Open that was held in Odense about one month ago.
Both Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong won their first ever Superseries title at the Denmark Open, but lost to Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmussen of Denmark in the first round of French Open.
