Sydney: Hans-Kristian Vittinghus who kept his cool to clinch the winning point for Denmark in the Thomas Cup final in Kunshan, China last month, came through a tough men’s singles semi-final to beat India’s Srikanth Kidambi 22-20, 21-13 at the Australian Badminton Open in Sydney on Saturday.
Vittinghus will play South Korean Jeon Hyeok-Jin in the final.
The South Korean Jeon also survived a stern examination by Indonesian teenager Anthony Sinisuka Ginting after he rallied from dropping a set to beat the 19-year-old Indonesian 21-19, 16-21, 21-19 in a three-set thriller in 79 minutes.
Ginting has demonstrated his talents on the elite level of badminton, when he upset Chinese World No.2 and top seed Chen Long on Friday in the quarter-finals.
India’s Saina Nehwal who won the tournament in 2014, produced a masterful display when she needed only 31 minutes to beat No. 4 seed Wang Yihan 21-8, 21-12 in women’s singles semi-finals.
Nehwal is set to play World No. 12 Sun Yu of China in the women‘s singles final on Sunday. Sun pulled off an upset in the other semi-final to stun third seed and compatriot Li Xuerui 21-18, 21-19.
