Kuala Lumpur: 2014 Thomas Cup runners-up Malaysia have concluded a ten-day training camp and have departed for Kunshan to participate in the up-and-coming Thomas and Uber Cup finals in China.
Speaking to reporters at the KL International Airport’s (KLIA) departure hall before leaving for Kunshan, Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) technical director Morten Frost Hansen hoped that the Malaysian squad would have a good start at the Thomas and Uber Cup matches.
“I’m looking forward to a good start as everybody remains injury-free.”
“We’ve been talking about Thomas and Uber Cup for a long time, and we are looking forward to it,” said Frost.
Frost was also happy to see improvement from Malaysian Thomas and Uber Cup shuttlers after the 10-day closed-door training.
“The players adapted well with the on court training and also some physical training,” said Frost.
World No. 2 Lee Chong Wei has been selected as the team captain for the Thomas Cup squad, and others in the team are Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin, Chong Wei Feng and Goh Soon Huat with doubles’ pairs of Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong, Koo Kien Keat/ Tan Boon Heong as well as Teo Ee Yi/Ong Yew Sin.
As for the Uber Cup team, doubles shuttler Goh Liu Ying has been named the team captain, and this will be her second Uber Cup as she was featured in 2010 edition. The rest of Uber Cup comprised of 9 other shuttlers including Tee Jing Yi, Goh Jin Wei, Ho Yen Mei, Sonia Cheah, Vivian Hoo/Woon Khe Wei, Chow Mei Kuan/Lee Meng Yean and Amelia Anscelly.
Malaysia last won the Thomas Cup back in 1992 in Kuala Lumpur when they defeated Indonesia.
However, the Malaysian women’s team has yet to win the Uber Cup.
