Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s men’s doubles pair Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong who have the capabilities to beat any men’s pairs that ranked higher than them, but their obvious talent has overshadowed by inconsistency throughout their partnership.
Nevertheless, the pair is determined to produce good showing at the Malaysia Open Super Series that will be held from April 5 to April 10 at the Melawati Stadium in Shah Alam, Malaysia.
Goh/Tan could seal their ticket ahead of compatriots Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong in the qualifying race for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in August – if they could prevent any major hiccups at the Malaysia Open.
“We got a very difficult draw, but I will try to stay positive,” said Tan Wee Kiong.
“I also hope Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong will also qualify for the Olympic Games as well,” added Tan.
However, Goh/Tan who are currently World No. 14 held no great advantage of qualifying for the Olympics over Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong who ranked World No. 16. According to Badminton World Federation (BWF), only the top 16 pairs based on the May 5 rankings list can qualify for Rio Janeiro.
Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong will play their opening match against Chen Hung Ling/Wang Chi-Lin of Taiwan in the first round, but face tricky second-round match against top seeds Lee Yong Dae/Yoo Yeon Seong of Korea.
