Kuala Lumpur: Former world No. 4 men’s singles shuttler Indra Wijaya, who moved to Singapore after representing Indonesia from 1995 to 2000, started his new career officially as men’s singles coach of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) on Feb 11.
Wijaya has been tasked to train players from the backup squad and would take charge of seven players such as Cheam June Wei, R. Satheishtharan, Yeoh Seng Zoe, Muhd Syafiq Jamaluddin, Chin Wai Kin, Lee Xii Jia and Tan Jin Wei.
No matter who Wijaya coaches, his own coaching style and philosophy have already started to emerge and all began with his attention to detail.
“I am going to divide the players into different groups and I am going to instill the change and team spirit quickly. I would like the players to learn about great work ethic and to keep improving their game,” said Wijaya.
“I will make several adjustments, but I am going to teach the Malaysian players following the methods I’ve been using in South Korea.”
“People have high expectations on me for this position, I am going to step up to the challenge.”
Indra Wijaya was South Korea’s men’s singles coach and the Korea badminton has caught up with the rest of the world, especially in men’s and women’s singles over the last two and a half years.
