Kuala Lumpur: Rexy Mainaky who won the men doubles 1996 Atlanta Olympic gold medal with Ricky Subagja, may be back in the picture as a candidate for the potential men’s doubles coach position in Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).
Rexy Mainaky who is currently the Head of Development and Performance for Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI), is considered one of top men’s doubles coaches in the world and is one of the hottest coaching prospects should he become available.
He admitted that BAM Technical Director Morten Frost Hansen did approach him and asked him to lead Malaysia’s men’s doubles department in October, but since the Olympic was only 8 months away, he felt the time was too short for him to create an impact on the men’s doubles and thus rejected the offer.
“I told Morten Frost I can’t do much in eight months, and I was not clear back then what his views were, and we didn’t discuss it further.”
“I believed Morten Frost understood my situation. After that, I read from the newspaper that BAM has appointed Cheah Soon Kit as the men’s doubles coach.”
Rexy not completely ruled out the possibility of returning to BAM, especially when his wife and son still live in Malaysia.
“Who knows? Let’s wait and see, I have no further comment to make regarding this,” said Mainaky.
Rexy Mainaky’s contract as Head of Development and Performance at PBSI expires after the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, and seems like he is keeping his options open for now.
Rexy coached Malaysia for seven and a half years until 2012, then made his brief stint at Philippines before PBSI President Gita Wirjawan invited him to go back to Indonesia.
