Singapore: Malaysia’s mixed doubles pair of Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying advanced to the SEA Games quarter-finals in mixed doubles category on Saturday after they defeated Singapore’s Vanessa Neo/ Danny Bawa Chrisnanta 21-18, 21-16 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.The quick thinking move by Chan Peng Soon & Goh Liu Ying earns them a point.

Chan Peng Soon broke his racket string when the Malaysia pair was leading 9-5 in the first set. Then, Goh Liu Ying made a surprising move by exchanging her racket with Chan, so that Chan could continue smashing from the back court. Ironically, Goh Liu Ying eventually sealed the point of the rally using the racket that has the broken string. (Watch the racket exchange around 13.18 at video below)

Another’s mixed doubles pair, Tan Aik Quan and Lai Pei Jing also won their opening match and will play in the quarter-finals against Indonesia’s Praveen Jordan and Debby Susanto on Sunday.

In the women’s singles badminton competition at the SEA Games, Tee Jing Yi and Goh Jin Wei took care of the opponents in straight-sets respectively to remain on course for the women’s singles gold medal.

Singapore’s Liang Xiaoyu had the upper hand against Yee Le Le of Myanmar in their round of 16 encounter. Liang will play against Hanna Ramadini of Indonesia in the quarter-finals on Sunday. However, another Singaporean women’s singles, Grace Chua failed to advance after she was brushed aside 0–2 by Indonesia’s Lindaweni Fanetri.

Malaysia’s Anscelly Amelia Alicia/Soong Fie Cho have joined Vivian Hoo/Woon Khe Wei to clinch their quarter-finals spots on Sunday in the women’s doubles event.
