Singapore: Indonesian shuttler Simon Santoso’s dreams of defending his Singapore Open Super Series title was shattered when he slumped to a 10-21, 13-21 defeat against Japan’s Kento Momota in the men’s singles semifinal at the Singapore Open on Saturday.
Santoso who had beaten Momota once in 2012, only able to put up some resistance against the Japanese early in the first set, other than that, he played pretty awkwardly the whole match and had to swallow defeat in just 37 minutes. Momota will face Hu Yun of Hong Kong in the final on Sunday. Hu Yun defeated Parupalli Kashyap of India 20-22, 21-11, 21-14 in another men’s singles semifinal.
Taiwanese Tai Tzu Ying sent shockwaves through the Singapore Open on Saturday as she toppled women’s singles defending champion, Wang Yihan of China 21-16, 9-21, 21-14 in a 54 minutes thriller. Meanwhile, second seed Wang Shixian was also upset by her unseeded compatriot Sun Yu 14-21, 21-11, 19-21.
In men’s doubles semi-finals, a gritty Fu Haifeng/Zhang Nan pair from China outlasted last week’s Malaysia Open champions Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia 18-21, 21-8, 21-17, while another Indonesia pair Angga Pratama/Ricky Karanda Suwardi outplayed third seeds Hiroyuki Endo/Kenichi Hayakawa of Japan to book a final berth at the Singapore.
Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei of China will square off their compatriots Lu Kai/Huang Yaqiong in the mixed doubles final, while top seeds Misaki Matsutomo/Ayaka Takahashi of Japan will battle Ou Dongni/Yu Xiaohan for the women’s doubles crown on Sunday.
