Singapore: The men’s singles defending champion Simon Santoso of Indonesia defeated Thailand’s Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk 21-10, 21-19 on Friday to advance to the semi-finals of the OUE Singapore Open. Santoso will face Japan’s Kento Momota in the semi-finals.
Also through was Hong Kong’s Hu Yun, who beat Tian Houwei of China 17-21, 21-18, 21-10. Hu will clash with Commonwealth Games champion Parupalli Kashyap of India in the semi-finals.
In men’s doubles, top seeds Lee Yong-dae/Yoo Yeon Seong crashed out of the tournament after they suffered a shock defeat to Angga Pratama/Ricky Karanda Suwardi of Indonesia. Angga Pratama/Ricky Karanda Suwardi will play third seeds Hiroyuki Endo/Kenichi Hayakawa of Japan on Saturday’s semi-finals, while winners of last week’s Malaysia Open Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia will square off with Fu Haifeng/Zhang Nan of China in another men’s doubles semi-finals.
Despite a slow start, Wang Yihan of China fought back from one set down to dispatch former world champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand 10-21, 21-19, 21-12 in 76 minutes in the women’s singles quarter-finals. Wang Yihan set up a semi-finals battle with Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwan on Saturday. Meanwhile, it’s going to be an all Chinese affairs in other women’s singles semi-finals when Sun Yu has to roll past second seed Wang Shixian to qualify for the final berth at the Singapore Open.
