Singapore: Wow, Wow, Wow, all seeded players in the men’s singles category were knocked out from the Singapore Open on Thursday in a day that full of upsets.
Winner of last week’s Malaysia Open, world no. 1 Chen Long from China was ousted from the second round of the Singapore Open, losing to unseeded Hu Yun of Hong Kong 21-12, 17-21, 18-21 in 63 minutes.
Second seed Jan Jorgensen of Denmark also suffered a second round exit at the hands of India’s H. S. Prannoy. Jorgensen lost 16-21, 8-21 in 33 minutes. Men’s singles third seed Kidambi Srikanth of India was also beaten by unseeded player Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk of Thailand. Srikanth went down 15-21, 20-22 in 38 minutes. The defending champion Simon Santoso of Indonesia was however able to make it to the quarter-finals by battle past fifth seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark 21-17,16-21, 21-12.
In the absence of world no. 1 Li Xuerui, world no. 2 Saina Nehwal, and world no. 3 Carolina Marin, world no. 4 Wang Shixian of China who all of a sudden became the unlikely favorite to win the women’s title in Singapore, dispatched Pai Yu Po of Taiwan 21-17, 21-14 on Thursday, while her compatriot Wang Yihan was involved in a tough fight with Zhang Beiwen of USA before Wang prevailed with 11-21, 21-9, 21-16.
In men’s doubles, last week’s Malaysia Open champions Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia and the top seeds Lee Yong Dae/Yoo Yeon Seong of Korea were able to advance to the third round. Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan will face compatriots Wahyu Nayaka Arya Pankaryanira/Ade Yusuf on Friday, while Lee Yong Dae/Yoo Yeon Seong will take on another Indonesian pair Angga Pratama/Ricky Karanda Suwardi in the quarter-finals.
