Kuala Lumpur: World No. 2 women’s singles player Carolina Marin of Spain won her maiden Malaysia Open title on Sunday. Marin got the better of China’s Olympic champion Li Xuerui in the women’s singles final 19-21, 21-19, 21-17 in an hour and 11 minutes.
Carolina Marin became the first Spanish and second European, after Tine Rasmussen of Denmark to win the title.
With the crowd overwhelmingly behind her, Marin won eight consecutive points, fought back from 9-14 to pull ahead with 17-14, and then reeled off another four consecutive points to claim a commanding three-sets win over Li Xuerui.
“I was expecting a tough game in the final, and I am happy with my performance. The tremendous support from the crowd really motivated me and gave me lot of of confidence,” said Marin.
The victory gave the world No.2 Carolina Marin a 2-3 career meetings record against the World No.3 Li Xuerui, who on Saturday ended India’s Saina Nehwal campaign in the semi-final. Carolina Marin pocketed prize money of US$37,500, while Li Xuerui took home US$19,000.
In the women’s doubles final, the Chinese pair of Luo Ying and Luo Yu overwhelmed South Koreans Chang Ye Na and Jung Kyung Eun 21-18, 21-9 in 54 minutes.
