New Delhi: No. 3 seed Lin Dan eased into the second round of the India Open Super Series on Wednesday by defeating Wang Tzu Wei of Chinese Taipei 21-15, 21-16 in just 32 minutes. Lin Dan will play Hu Yun of Hong Kong on Thursday. His younger compatriot Xue Song, however, managed to pull off an upset to battle past fourth seed Chou Tien Chen of Taiwan 21-14, 21-16 in 38 minutes.
After a bad start in the qualifying round, where no Malaysian singles player came through the qualifying, the Malaysian camp finally got some good news on Wednesday. In mixed doubles, the unseeded Malaysian pair Tan Aik Quan-Lai Pei Jing shocked sixth seeds Danny Bawa Chrisnanta-Vanessa Neo of Singapore 21-12, 21-17 to advance to the second round. Meanwhile, reigining Commonwealth Games champions Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei blew past Indonesia’s Gebby Ristiyani Imawan-Tiara Rosalia Nuraidah 21-15, 21-19 in the first round and will play Chan Tsz ka/Tse Ying Suet of Hong Kong in the second round.
Other Malaysian shuttlers were eliminated in the first round of India Open on Wednesday.
