London: GB Badminton have now opened applications for the groundbreaking Elite Coach Programme which will give UKCC Level 3 badminton coaches the opportunity to develop their skills to those required at the very elite end of the sport.
It will give any aspiring national coaches the opportunity to work first-hand with the GB Badminton World Class Performance Programme, with the objective of developing a depth of elite badminton coaching talent throughout the home nations for the future benefit of the sport.
GB Badminton and the home nations are looking to more closely align their respective talent pathways and the World Class Performance Programme and build a transparent, sustainable performance programme built on common values and philosophy.
Innovation
The Elite Coach Development Programme has been developed with the overall vision to provide a broad, high quality coaching workforce with the confidence, knowledge and experience to develop and support players capable of winning medals at major championships.
The specific aims of the programme are to:
• Provide identified coaches with access to innovative high quality learning experiences, that will in the short term improve the level of coaching they are currently providing to their players within the performance pathway, and in the long term prepare them to effectively support and develop world class British players.
• Develop the coaches’ leadership skills related to player and programme management
• Provide opportunities for supported experiential learning
The on-court programme will be led by the National Coaches who are witnessing firsthand the developments in elite play on the world stage. This delivery will not solely be formal input from the National Coaches, as the selected coaches will have open access to the training at the National Badminton Centre and able to observe this work in action as well as access to bespoke online learning opportunities.
The selected coaches will also be mentored in their progress by one of the National Coaches.
If the selected coaches are to be involved in the World Class Programme in the future, then they need to be effective in managing the players, motivating them, providing feedback and support, planning future developments, understanding the performance science information etc. This area will be delivered by the National Coaches and EIS staff as well as sourcing external experts who may be able to augment this work from different perspectives.
It is critical that the selected candidates can put their learning into practice and also to learn more deeply from their experiences. They will develop this as a result of attending the National Badminton Centre on a regular basis, observing and assisting with training, asking questions of the National Coaches and also working with the National Coaches and the players at International events.
Application process
Coaches that meet the following criteria are invited to apply by completing the Application Form which can be found here.

• Significant high level badminton experience (within playing and/or coaching)
• Exposure to high performance sport
• An aspiration to work with world class athletes
• A commitment to personal development
Places on the programme are restricted, so it is critical that coaches that wish to take one of the places provide a compelling case for their inclusion.
Each of the sections within the application carry equal weighting, so coaches need to clearly detail why they are appropriate for selection and the contribution that can make towards developing our elite players.
