Copenhagen: Rexy Mainaky who quit his job as national coach of the Malaysian badminton team two years ago still miss Malaysia a lot.
Actually, that doesn’t mean he wants to coach the Malaysian national team again, it is because his wife and his children has chosen to remain in Malaysia after he went back to his home country to become the high performance director of the Indonesia badminton team.
“I visit them once a month. They’ve decided to settle there. Malaysia is their home now,” said Rexy.
The 1996 Atlanta Olympics gold medalist coached Malaysian team for seven and a half years. It was Rexy’s decision to pair up Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong and saw the duo winning the country’s first Asian Games gold medal in 36 years at Doha in 2006. Koo/Tan then ruled the world for about six months, winning every tournament along the way including the All-England in 2007.
Rexy remained cautious when asked about the chances of Indonesian at the World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark.
“Our team was hard hit by injuries and illnesses prior to the World Championships. However, I am hoping our players are at least able to reach finals in three events, such as Tommy Sugiarto in men’s singles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles,” said Rexy.
