Kuala Lumpur: Chong Wei Feng is optimistic he can spring a surprise at the Commonwealth Games after being picked for the Malaysia squad. If everything goes as planned, he will face off against world number one Lee Chong Wei in the men’s singles final.
“Chong Wei is looking for his third Commonwealth gold, and if I can reach the final, I’ll be satisfied with a silver medal, because we are clearly in different level,” said Wei Feng.
Wei Feng’s strong Thomas Cup run had given him the confidence to go on to do well at Glasgow.
“I have regained some of my self-confidence. I am getting better at staying calm and focused during a match,” said Wei Feng.
However, Wei Feng is going to have a tough road to the final. He will have to face challenges from India’s world No. 20 P. Kashyap and world No. 29 K. Srikanth, European Championship silver medalist Rajiv Ouseph of England and world No. 39 Derek Wong of Singapore before reaching final.
“Rajiv and Kashyap are on their top forms, they could cause a lot of troubles for me. Nevertheless, I still believe I have 50% chance of advancing to the final,” added Wei Feng.
Meanwhile, Wei Feng was also registered for the men’s doubles event in Glasgow partnering Chan Peng Soon. However, he is more positive about his performance in singles than the doubles.
“It’s going to be fun to play doubles with Peng Soon. However, we haven’t done as much practice as we would like since he just came back from the Australian Open.” said Wei Feng.
