New Delhi: Lee Chong Wei was named the BWF Male Player of the Year for 2013 for his remarkable performances in 2013 by winning 6 superseries tournaments and the Super Series Masters Finals; he was also the runner-up in the World Championships in Guangzhou last year. Other BWF Male Player of the Year 2013 nominees were Lin Dan and Chen Long of China, the doubles duo Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan from Indonesia; and Ko Sung-hyun-Lee Yong-dae of South Korea.
Li Xuerui of China won the 2013 Female Player of the Year award. She won the BWF World Superseries Premier events, Indonesia Open and the China Open last year. She was the runner-up at the BWF World Championships after falling to Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon. Other nominees for the coveted award were Ratchanok Intanon,Wang Yihan,Women’s Doubles World champions, Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang.
Lee Chong Wei led the Malaysia team to a classic hard fought thriller against Japan on Sunday’s Thomas Cup Final, before going down 2-3.
On the other hand, Li Xuerui led China to a successful defence of the Uber Cup on Saturday, beating Japan 3-1 in the final.
The Promising Player of the Year award was won by the 16-year-old Akane Yamaguchi. The Japanese defended her 2013 World Junior title in April this year. Regarded as one of the rising female suttlers, she also captured the Japan Open in 2013.
