New Delhi: In the Group A clash between Indonesia and Thailand yesterday, Indonesia’s fans has nothing to worry about even when Tommy Sugiarto lost the first singles to Boonsak Ponsana in 21-14,13-21, 17-21 in 66 minutes. This showed how strong the Indonesia lineup was compare to the Thailand team.
After trailing by as many as a 10 points in the rubber game, Tommy Sugiarto was able to storm back to tie the game at 17-17 before losing to Boonsak.
Even when Tommy Sugiarto lost the opening first singles but it was otherwise smooth sailing for top seeds Indonesia as they came back to beat Thailand 4-1 in their final Group A clash to check into the quarter-finals of the Thomas Cup Finals at the Siri Fort Indoor Stadium.
Indonesia leveled the tie 1-1 when Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan, the World No. 1 pair defeated Wannawat Ampunsuwan-Nipitphon Puangpuapech 21-15, 21-14 easily.
Indonesia scored its second point through second singles Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka. He defeated Suppanyu Avihingsanon 21-17, 21-19 in 46 minutes.
Ryan Agung Saputra-Angga Pratama clinched the winning point for Indonesia by overcoming Maneepong Jongjit-Patiphat Chalardchalaem 21-14, 22-20.
Simon Santoso won the fifth game 21-13, 21-13 over Thammasin Sitthikom, to make it 4-1.
“We were in a training camp for two weeks before departing for New Delhi. We are well prepared, and our team’s energy levels are high. After topping Group A, we will play one game at a time in the knockout stages,” said Simon Santoso.
Indonesia will play Korea team on Thursday’s quarter-finals.
