Kuala Lumpur: Last few months had been disastrous for Daren Liew and Chong Wei Feng, their lack luster performance is especially worrisome ahead of the Thomas Cup Finals in New Delhi on May 18-25.
So far, the confirmed men’s singles for Malaysia’s Thomas Cup squad are Chong Wei, Wei Feng and Daren. World No 152 Goh Soon Huat will most likely be the fourth singles.
On Saturday, the council members of Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) will decide if they would accept coaches’ recommendation by placing – Lee Chong Wei, Chong Wei Feng, Daren Liew and Goh Soon Huat in the Thomas Cup. However, the council could also overrule coaches’ decision to drop Soon Huat and to add Ramdan since Ramdan has proven himself by winning five international titles. Although it is highly unlikely that this would happen, the council could also decides to include Goh Soon Huat and Misbun Ramdan and to drop either Daren Liew or Chong Wei Feng.
“End of last year, my injured heel really bothered me a lot, I was forced to skip couple tournaments.” said Daren. “If I were to play third singles this time, I am going to have to play my best to win especially when the game is tie at 2-2,” added Daren.
In the men’s doubles, the council will also have to decide if they want to bring back Koo Kien Keat, or to select either Chan Peng Soon or Ow Yao Han.
Well, we really hope the BAM council would be very objective and fair about their decision.
