Unseeded Indonesian Simon Santoso pulled off a major shock when he upset world number one Lee Chong Wei to win the Singapore badminton Open for the first time on Sunday.
Simon already produced an incredible show on Saturday by sending world number 7 Du Pengyu packing on Saturday. He was able to keep his momentum going in the final by beating Chong Wei in an emphatic 21-15, 21-10 victory in 48 minutes, a result that shocked the badminton community around the world.
When Santoso was able reel off nine straight points in second set, it’s basically shattered Chong Wei’s bid of fourth title of the year. Right after Simon scored the match point, he immediately dropping his racquet to the court and raising his arms in celebration in front of a bemused crowd.
“I am very excited about the win, especially against the best badminton player in the world,” said Simon.
"I have not beaten Chong Wei in a long time, and I was struggling in the qualifying round early in the tournament. However, this win will certainly install me among the top bracket and act as a tonic to face other tournaments," said Santoso after the match.
This was only Santoso’s second win in 11 matches against the All-England champion, who had lost just once this year.
Simon took home US$22,500 (RM72,792) while Chong Wei was rewarded US$11,400 (RM36,881) as the runner-up.
As much as we want Chong Wei to win, in reality, no top athlete can stay undefeated forever. To certain extends, it’s ok it's an it's normal for Chong Wei to lose, this would also get pressure off his shoulder that he doesn’t have to capture every title for every tournament he plays. All he needs to do is to be able to come out top in some important tournaments such as world championship and Olympic. Most importantly, he needs to stay injury-free until Olympic 2016.
Prior to the Singapore Open, Chong Wei had already bagged the Malaysian Open Super Series in January, All England in March and the India Open early this month.
