Kuala Lumpur: Wong Tat Meng, the Director of Coaching of Team LZJ, has shed light on the underlying issues faced by Lee Zii Jia, emphasizing the importance of confidence in overcoming the weight of high expectations placed upon him.

Having joined Team LZJ recently, Tat Meng expressed his belief in Zii Jia’s immense potential and talent, despite his current struggle with consistency.

“At just 23 years old, Zii Jia has already made a name for himself by winning the prestigious All England Championship—an outstanding achievement both for us and the entire badminton world. However, since then, he has encountered difficulties adapting to the attention and expectations surrounding him,” Tat Meng shared.

“It’s a common phenomenon in the sporting world, where athletes, not just Zii Jia, often face challenges with consistency. He possesses remarkable potential and talent in the badminton arena, but it comes as a package deal.”

Acknowledging the high hopes held by numerous individuals, including fans, the media, and society at large, Tat Meng emphasized the need for Zii Jia to manage the pressure and cultivate a strong mental approach to the sport.

“Beyond honing his skills, I’ve been guiding him extensively on the psychological aspect—how to handle pressure, manage tournaments, and deal with expectations. It’s not solely about on-court achievements; it’s a holistic approach,” Tat Meng revealed in a special meeting video shared by the LZJ Team on their official Twitter account.

Currently ranked 16th globally, Zii Jia is preparing to compete in the upcoming Korea Open from July 18 to 23, where he is set to face Tat Meng’s former protégé from Hong Kong, Ng Ka Long, in the first round.

“We will approach the match against Ng Ka Long like any other opponent. While Ka Long has emerged victorious against Zii Jia on several recent occasions, we anticipate challenges from all competitors,” Tat Meng affirmed.

“I need to witness Zii Jia’s performance in the upcoming championships, including the Korea, Japan, and Australian Opens, before formulating a comprehensive program tailored to his needs,” Tat Meng added.

By delving into the core difficulties faced by Lee Zii Jia, Wong Tat Meng aims to guide and support the talented athlete on his journey to success.
