Suzhou: The hosts secured a quarter-final berth after Zheng Siwei/Huang Yaqiong, Shi Yuqi, and He Bingjiao guaranteed China a spot in the knockout stage of the 2023 Sudirman Cup on Tuesday.
Highlights of China vs. Singapore at the 2023 Sudirman Cup:
Zheng Siwei/Huang Yaqiong opened the tie between China and Singapore in style when they beat Terry Hee Yong Kai/Jessica Tan Wei Han 22-20, 21-19 in 43 minutes.
“Because the mixed doubles match is the first match, we shouldered a huge responsibility to ensure we win the first point for our team,” said Zheng.
“We know Terry and Jessica are in strong form because we saw their math against Denmark. We already prepared to take the match to the third set if necessary,” said Huang.
In the men’s singles match, Singapore did not play World No. 4 Loh Kean Yew, instead, it was World No. 88 Jason Teh Jia Heng who faced World No. 10 Shi Yuqi. Of course, the result was as expected when Shi beat Teh 21-10, 21-17 to register the second point for China.
He Bingjiao settled the tie when she defeated Yeo Jiamin 22-20, 21-15 to make the overall score 3-0.
Although the hosts were already assured of reaching the quarter-finals with two wins (against Egypt and Singapore) in Group A, they tried to maintain a perfect record in the tie against Singapore by winning the remaining men’s doubles and women’s doubles matches.
In the other tie between Denmark and Egypt, Denmark won 5-0 to join China to advance to the quarter-finals.
