Suzhou: Goh Jin Wei booked Malaysia’s place in the 2023 Sudirman Cup quarter-finals by defeating India’s 2019 World Championships gold medalist PV Sindhu 14-21, 21-10, 22-20 to score the decisive third point for Malaysia in their Sudirman Cup second Group C clash on Monday.

Monday’s match was the fifth career meeting between the World No. 34 Goh Jin Wei and World No. 12 PV Sindhu. The 27-year-old Sindhu has won all the previous four matches. After Goh lost the first game 14-21, many Malaysian fans already set their eyes on the men’s doubles match between Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik and India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty.
Nonetheless, Goh captivated the attention of everyone in the Suzhou Olympic Sports Centre when she won the second game 21-10 and was once leading 13-2 in the decider. However, Sindhu also put up a spirited fight, staging a remarkable comeback to tie the game at 19-19 and 20-20, before Goh held her nerves to convert the third game with 22-20.
Earlier, the mixed doubles pair, Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai contributed the first point for Malaysia after winning over Dhruv Kapila/Ashwini Ponappa 21-16, 21-17 before Lee Zii Jia put Malaysia comfortably 2-0 ahead with a win to over Kidambi Srikanth 21-16, 21-11 in the men’s singles match.
The men’s doubles world champions Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik then brushed aside the challenge of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty 21-18, 21-19 while Pearly Tan/Muralitharan Thinaah wrapped up the proceeding when they beat Treesa Jolly/Gayatri Gopichand Pullela 21-15, 21-13.
Malaysia will play Chinese Taipei on Wednesday to determine the champions of Group C.
