Saarbrucken: The men’s singles World No. 7 – Jonathan Christie of Indonesia continued his Hylo Open run after scrapping past compatriot World No. 25 Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo in 59 minutes on Thursday.
The resilience displayed by Wardoyo gave Christie a lot of headaches before the 2018 Asian Games gold medalist finally won the encounter.
Wardoyo started the first game with a 5-0 lead but Christie leveled it to 15-15 to go on to clinch the first game 21-18.
In the second game, the score was very close after the interval as Wardoyo was able to come back from 6-12 to tie the score at 19-19, and 20-20.
Both players were pushing each other to the limit until sudden death when Christie finally score the 30th point to take the second game 30-28.
Christie is set to meet Kidambi Srikanth of India on Friday.
Also made the quarter-finals was Indonesia’s World No. 6 Anthony Sinisuka Ginting. Ginting defeated Kodai Naraoka of Japan 21-13, 21-19 to play Loh Kean Yew of Singapore in the last eight.
“I tried to play aggressively and patiently. Kodai also seemed unforgettable with my fast tempo game,” said Ginting.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s challenge at the 2022 Hylo Open came to an end when Daren Liew, Tan Kian Meng/Tan Wee Kiong, and Vivian Hoo/Lim Chiew Sien crashed out in the men’s singles, men’s doubles, and women’s doubles events respectively.
